Do the WKPP folks or any others have a recommendation or standard
practice?

Work out every day. I lay off a couple of days in advance of a really
big dive to prevent hit due to damage from the workouts, but I start
back immediately the next day. For normal diving , I will even work out
the same day before diving. At home in the summer, I swim three miles at
least on the beach in the morning before going diving.

Weight training is only for a specific result. For instance, I may do
a small amount of work on one muscle or another to increase speed of a
swimming stoke or a run, or to offset another muscle that is getting too
much attention, but not anything heavy. Even if you wanted to build
srength for a sport like football, doing something like close grip high
reps on a bench will give you a lot more than just a straight bench, and
without the bulk, and will build the required capillary beds to do it
properly.
