Exercise and DCS I do not think exercise after diving is a wise idea and have stated that already, however some people wanted more information and I suspect are looking for medical advice (a bunch of Latin terms) I myself however do not think that a next day jog is worth a type 1 or type 2 hit, personally I'll wait the 48 hours. I did a little research for those of you who are interested, I contacted DAN over the web medicine@da*.yc*.or* Daniel A. Nord, EMT-P, CHT Dan Medical Staff Wrote: "This response should not be confused with medical advice, According to a study on Exercise and Decompression Sickness conducted here at Duke University Medical Centre, Dr. Richard Vann demonstrated that the effect of exercise on the risk of decompression sickness is determined by the exercise severity and where in a pressure environment it occurs. Exercise, both before and following diving, promotes bubble formation which interferes with inert gas uptake and elimination and increases DCS risk. Interestingly, the study indicated a notable difference in DCS incidence between the aerobic and anaerobic subjects. It appears that the training effect, which accompanies frequent aerobic exercise, may accelerate resting nitrogen elimination and place aerobic subjects at a reduced DCS risk. Lacking a lot of good solid evidence, the general recommendation is to avoid heavy exercise, before and after diving, to limit the risk of DCS. Acceptable levels of risk for decompression sickness depend on individual judgement and circumstance. Strenuous physical exercise is a relative term and should be based on your level of conditioning. However, there is general agreement you should avoid heavy exertional weight training before and after diving." -----Original Message----- From: Jason Weisacosky <hypoxic@tr*.mi*.or*> To: cavers@aq*.co* <cavers@aq*.co*>; techdiver@aquanaut.com <techdiver@aquanaut.com> Date: Sunday, November 30, 1997 3:34 PM Subject: Physical Training- Before/After Extreme Exposures >To any of the physiological 'heavy hitters': > > I am curious of any recommendations regarding physical training >before and after diving, in particular, extreme exposure diving. > To elaborate a bit, I am generally referring to extreme type >exposures as diving with bottom times requiring extensive >decompression.
