Jim,
Before you go stereotyping stop and consider a few things. I go out on dive
boats. I have wings, good divelites and the usual stuff to match. I don't
think I look particularly tough (unless you see me on my job) and I'm
certainly NOT a coward. I know my limits and stay well within them. MANY
other divers are just like me (ie: equipped the same way and stay in their
limits). Hey, you want to dive deeper and longer on your own brew mix? Fine.
Mix it yourself and do it. Enjoy. I will plod along going to my local dive
shop for my fills. Nothing fancy, just air. When I reach a point where I
decide to dive deeper I'll seek out instructors who are know for not taking
foolish chances and who have done enough deep diving in WATER to know what
the score is. And if I go with mixed gas, I have enough faith in my local
store to know that they will double check things. If my mix is potentially
hazardous to my health, they will tell me and more important, won't do the
fill. I can accept that. I've survived on my job for 20+ years by not taking
foolish chances. I'll survive diving the same way.
I would have stayed out of this convouluted mess that you and others have
stirred up until I saw you urging others to consider divers such as myself
to be yellow stripped cowards. I'm a diver beginning to explore more into the
technical area of diving and learning more each day. What you are doing is
guarrented to end up scaring off others who want to learn more of the
technical aspects of diving but are not skilled at the ways and means of
weeding thru the BS to pursue the truth.
