Jim,
In a message dated 97-10-17 11:45:18 EDT, you write:

<<
 Dan-

<<What I was trying to get across is that diver across from you *might*
be
one of the cowards. How can you tell? I don't know, that's why I solo
dive. I don't mean you are a coward, Dan, that is assuming that Dan Enig
is your real name. Sorry, I'm getting paranoid.>>

First of all, YOU did lump all of us equipped a certain way as cowards.
Perhaps you meant it as you state above? I'll give you the benefit of the
doubt. But I'll still keep the wings, lights and other assorted equipment.
Secondly, Solo dive? Hey it's your life. If it's not worth that much to you,
well it's your choice. Personally I dive with a buddy. I value my life a
little too much. I can die just as easily at work if I make an error as I can
while diving. At work I trust my partner to watch my back. I have to. And
they trust me. When diving, I also trust my buddy.
Third, I am real. Dan Enig is my real name (OK so it's Daniel and I left out
my middle name but I'm sure you get the point). If you are on AOL you can
look me up. I have a profile and I am legit. Sorry but no reason for you to
be paranoid.

Then you go on to say.....

<<If you don't mind me saying, I think you are out of your fucking mind
depending on your diveshop to ensure that your mix is correct. I'm sure
they are good people, but people have a bad day now and then. That bad
day could turn out to be YOUR bad day. And if there ever was a premiss in
diving, it is that you are responsible for your ass.>>

Well, I do mind the language but I promise I'm not offended. Some of my
friends would probably even agree with you (with stronger language). Here I
fouled up a bit. What I intended to say (not too clearly - sorry) is that I
count on them to double check me. Nothing wrong with that at all. Sometimes
one needs a second or third look at things. If I were to get a mixed gas
fill, I would watch as it was done. To learn and to double check. I've
watched calculations for a mix being made on calculator and blackboard,
double checked and then run thru a computer program to verify and check deco
stops, times, mixes etc.. They are probably less likely to have a bad day
than I would when they put that kind of caution and attention into their
work.

Then you went on to say..........

<<Don't go depending on the diveshop or anyone else, they are not diving
your tanks. And if you croak, they might shed a tear or two at the lost
business, but things are right back to normal in a day or two. Hey, I've
 seen it.>>

Actually, the dive store owner is most often my regular dive partner. So he
does dive my tanks so to speak. As I get into the more technical realm we
will be diving the same mixes. He is cautious and like me, would rather be to
the conservative side to avoid problems.

Then finally you state..........

<<And in that spirit, I highly recommend you spend $65 on a ceramtec 02
sensor, get a $14.95 volt meter and start checking your own gas. It's
easy, it's fun and it's the first step towards gas self-sufficiency.>>

Fair nuff. Where do I get a ceramtec O2 sensor for $65.00? I have yet to see
one for under $100.00. But still, if and when I get to the deeper waters and
go mixed gas, I still think I'll stick with my local shop.
I still go back to what I did state earlier. I'm a diver beginning to
explore more into the technical area of diving and learning more each day.
What you (and some others) are doing is guarranteed to end up scaring off
others who want to learn more of the technical aspects of diving but are not
skilled at the ways and means of weeding thru the BS to pursue the truth.
BTW, who is Ted Green and why do you (?)call his followers cowards? I must
admit I think I missed the original post on this thread.

Dan Enig
