Jim,

In a message dated 97-10-07 11:21:36 EDT, you write:

<< Chuck, I disagree with you.

 1. Zip ties suck, they should not be used for holding together life
support equipment. Double, triple, whatever it does not matter. To prove
this to yourself, try the twist test that Peter mentioned, it is an
 eye-opener.
 2. The alternative is cheaper, easier, and better than zip ties.
 3. You should never use a metal to metal connection. This split ring
stuff is bullshit, you know that, Chuck. You've got to be able to cut
 yourself out of a jam.

Go to your dive shop and get a spool of wreck/cave reel line. If they
don't know what you are talking about, leave that diveshop and never go
 back, go try another one.

Where you would use a zip tie, take some caver line, go around 3 times,
then tie off by using a square knot with a double twist on the bottom and
a single on top. Trim the ends off close, then take a cigarette lighter
and melt them down to the knot into little knobs, the knot will not
 become untied.

As I said, you have to be careful where you use the split rings because they
can not be cut away.

>>>>Keep in mind that these can not be cut away if necessary so be mindful of
where you are using them.<<<<

I have sealed knots by melting them many times. This blob works great for a
while but I have seen some become brittle and crack or crumble. When this
happens the knot is so short and so wet that it undoes very easily. The
best way to secure rope or line is to whip the standing ends down and coat
the whipping with one of the glues I mentioned. But melting works fine if
you melt the standig end to the knot and keep tabs on it.

What do you suggest for securing mouthpieces ? This is the only place I
have ever used zip ties and I back it up with glue. These don't get
twisted.
Would love to find an alternative though.

Chuck
