Jon, if the "tech" instructors and shops got serious about gas, they
would have it on hand and the price would be more reasonabbe. You have
to buy the air fill anyway, so if they cam up aith a combined price that
made sense, more would use it routinely - this would happen if more
people used it routinely.

While it is true that everyone would want to insure a better chance of
pulling of a dive by using gas, and could jsutify the cost if they
thought through the whole proceedure, like all of the preparation they
made in their gear and their planning, driving to the site or boat,
taking the time to go out there, and then succedssfully diving,
sometimes these things are not apparent.

Helium costs about 20 cents per cubic foot, and oxygen 10 cents, so if
the shops took that plus the air fill, they come out to a price that is
about 20-40 dollars more than the same air dive . For 20 dollors or even
40 more dollars for complex dives, the insurance of this last correct
"tool" to get the job done smoothly is well worth it, not even taking
into consideration the safety, only the reduction of the cluster and the
enhancement of the dive. The difference between the correct mix and a
stroke mix is in the single digits, the implied value of stroke's life,
computed much like the implied volatility of an option - based on what
the "market" price for a dead stroke is - tells you what a stroke thinks
his dumb ass is worth when he dives "17/17, or a high aed.

For northerners, who do not get to dive as constantly as we do, I would
think they would be more likely to spend the money. I dive so much that
I keep a 6 bottle helium bank, a seven bottle oxygen, and a two bottle
argon. This costs me about 6 per bottle of rent per month. The air fills
end up costing me about 40 for a cave dive, less for ocean , although I
do get charged the same for litle bottles as big. I rarely use my own
compressor, and in fact Bronwies has it someplace now anyway.
