i currently have the thick OMS ss backplate with the standard deluxe
harness with all the bells and whistles.  i have tried to thread the plate
with a 1-piece harness, but was unhappy with the amount of kink (for lack
of a better word) that resulted in the upper slots.  the OMS plate's outer
'flanges' are bent at a 20 degree angle.  when the webbing is run straight
out over the shoulder, only the inner quarter of it takes the full load. 
my guess is that this is why the stock harness crosses behind the neck?

anyway, for those of you w/ the 1-piece harness, are the backplates you're
using flatter than this, or do you just ignore the kink?  TIA
