I agree with George. Yes, I said that. About two years ago, I made my debut on this list because I read something that Brett Gilliam wrote stating that diving the Atlantis to pO2's of 1.8 was OK and that a sport diver would never stay down long enough for their CNS "clock" to max out. I spoke out against it, wrote to him, this list and to others (even to Drager) and was told I was a newbie, didn't know what I was talking about, was a stupid fuck and other pleasantries. George was one of the few who spoke out at that time, publicly and forcefully, against deep air diving. And this was before several of the "brightest and the best", let alone other "lesser knowns", died doing it. Today, I know a good deal more about O2 toxicity than I did then (much of it shared with this list), but nothing has changed my mind about deep air diving. Diving to pO2's greater than 1.6 is a crap shoot. The risk at a pO2 of 2.0 is greater than that at 1.6, but the magnitude of the risk in the range 1.6 to 1.9 is NOT PREDICTABLE. And Murphy rules. "Do you feel lucky today?" George's "attitude" is appropriate. Every time one of the "brightest and the best" survives a deep air escapade/exposure, a less experienced, impressionable diver says "Well, maybe I'll try that - it looks macho". And some of them die. Not just the role model, but you, me, my buddy. This is not pushing the Goddamn envelope. Dive with the right training, the right equipment and the RIGHT GAS and you may push the envelope. Diving "deep air" is like jumping off the garage roof to fly: stupid enough when you're seven, fucking brilliant when your twenty-five - NOT! So listen up. I'll say it again and again (and so will Geo): Dive deeper than 200fsw on air and you run a significant risk of acute O2 toxicity - seizure and certain death. What's more, diving deeper than 130fsw on air WILL impair your judgement and EVERYONE is narced at 180fsw. Some will make a fatal mistake due to narcosis at even shallower depths. If you dive air deep, you not only risk your own life, but the stats show that you are likely to kill or bend your buddy who will try to rescue you.
