>To the instructors/divemasters out there.. > >What is your policy regarding insulin-dependent diabetic divers ? We >all know that it is DEFINITELY not recommended (NAUI says it's a big >no-no), but do you ever turn divers/ dive buddies away when you are >all kitted up ready to dive and they start frantically looking for a >Coca Cola for a sugar hit before they descend ? My feeling is probably different, in that I don't make my living from the diving industry. My teaching is for pleasure, and it is my way of studying the topic. Anyway, with that intro, here goes. First off, Diabetes is not a cut-and-dried issue. There are degrees of seriousness, with many different levels of management. If somebody is forced to do regular injections and has a constant sugar management problem, then, well, how can they do that on a dive? If they are only slightly inconvenienced, like, with dietary control or something, then, that is a much different situation. My approach is simply to send questionable cases to my internist. If he says ok, then I say ok. Most of the time, they come back a bit dis-gruntled, but well checked out, to say the least. ------------------------------------------------------- scot@bt*.co* Scot Anderson pp000082@in*.co* Voice: 703/761/6536 CIS:74147.2357 Fax: 703/556/9290
