However, it is quite uncommon to get only CO when you get bad air,
isn't it?  Considering only the carbon monoxide's effects may be
misleading in the "real world."  

"Bad air" often contains other compounds (oils, et al), whose negative
effect *is* directly related to density(1), then depth does matter for
most exposures to "bad air."

I recently had my first significant dose of bad air, at Nukubalavu
Resort on Kadavu, Fiji.  It was distinctly unpleasant, and not because
of CO.

(1) Actually, the effects of should depend on exposure to total
quantity inhaled, so length of exposure matters as well.
