Mike, Oxygen administration has two goals in the acute, life threatening carbon monoxide poisoning victime. #1 is, of course, to keep the patient alive with minimal or no hypoxic injury. In this case, the delivery of increased amounts of oxygen to the tissues as dissolved oxygen via hyperbaric therapy is a life saver. However, the patient cannot live in a chamber forever. So, we come to point #2 - The hyperbaric oxygen also increases the rate at which the carbon monoxide is "unbound" and eliminated. Thus, preserving life during the acute stages, and treating the underlying problem of having significant amounts of hemogloblin tied up with carbon monoxide. John Submariner Research, Ltd.
