Thirty entire feet of viz, and all it rates is a laconic "doable"?? Shit, you'd have to stick the viz on my last four dives together end-to-end to get thirty feet. You cavers are much much too spoiled. Up here in the Great Lakes, 30' is considered decent viz. Often it's a lot worse, and sometimes it's a lot better (thanks but no thanks to the zebra mussels). Last July, I was amazed to actually see the entire Munson from one vantage point for the first time. I guess I've got to start listening to all my friends who are telling me to go south and get me a cavers card. Or maybe I could already consider myself a caver of sorts: last dive, I was in a room about half a kilometre across, dish-shaped on the bottom, with a perfectly flat white luminous ceiling. Viz was about 10', and water temperature was 4C on the bottom and 0C just under the ceiling. Continuous guidelines to surface were of course utilized, although we didn't bother with the bit about three redundant lights since natural daylight was able to penetrate through the ceiling. (Note: I understand that it's only considered a cavern dive if you can still see sunlight, but for a fair comparison with a rock cave you'd have to only count the light that was coming in the entrance. That'd actually make an ice dive safer if it worked that way, because with light coming in everywhere, you literally can't see the entrance unless you're right under it and looking closely.) -- Anthony DeBoer http://www.onramp.ca/~adb/ adb@he*.re*.or* (here) adb@ge*.co* (work) #include "std.disclaimer" -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
