Ken, you need to pull your head out of your computer screen from time to time and walk around your office. That will keep the air sufficiently agitated so as to prevent stratification. I've been doing this for years, and no problems to report so far. I did have one close call, though - my office was vacant for 9 weeks while the campus was closed for the 1996 Summer Olympics. By the time I returned for the beginning of the fall term, the air had COMPLETELY stratified, and the nitrogen layer at the top had apparently became very unstable. When I opened my office door, all the nitrogen tumbled out with sufficient force to knock me down (kind of like what happens to cartoon characters when they open closets on TV). If it had not been for a very thick layer of pure O2 on the floor, I probably would have suffocated. So let this be a lesson to all of you. Agitate your surroundings often - your life may depend on it. -JimG -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
