Hate to jump into a fracas, but this discussion ceases to be discussion but an evalgelist tirade of Mr. Lungs. 1. Asthma is not a single disease. Thus each case of asthma should B decided upon on an individual basis. 2. Blanket 'should not dives', or 'can dive to x ft' physical reports (wh/ I've seen many of) are not the ans. I have seen many diving-knowledgeable physicians clear asthmatics in the US - again they looked @ what causes the attack. 3. The BSAC has experience w/ asthmatics diving & report no greater diving related problems among that group, compared to non-asthmatics. That is a statistical study. 4. When the question came up a few days ago, I posted an abstract of the BSAC guidelines & when a question related to 'deco' diving was added, posted additional info. Apparently (from an earlier posting by Mr Lungs') that individual, an admitted asthmatic, was cleared for diving, though he would refrain from 'deep dives' (save for deco associated problems, why - that escpaes me). That was a result of a respiratory f(x) test (w/ or w/o challenge, w/ or w/o bronchodilator, never mentioned). Thus Mr Lungs's 'absolute' stance appears to only apply on the net. 5. I have to thank Mr Davison for maintaining his cool despite the personalized timbre of the attacks. I have to, however, also point out that the anecdotal nature of Mr. Davison's experience is just that, and should not be construed as a general licence. Then again if anyone does, it will only help cleanse the gene pool. 6. As an aside, Mr. Lungs, pray tell why you consulted the PDR (Physicians Desk Reference, to me) for info on diving & asthma. There is a plethora of hyperbaric medicine publications, including workshops of the UHMS, much material on the net (do a search 'asthma scuba diving'). I have not looked @ a PDR recently, but that lists medications & their interactions (or did you mean Merck Index again of limitd value in the very specilized arena). 7. Again jumping into a fracas is unsavory, but the information being written has been less than accurate & I suggest that maybe, if going to continue such an exchange, it is better done via private e-mail. 8. Mr Davison, thank you for taking the time to post the Brit Study. 9. Mr. Lungs, as you appear to desire proof of 'qualifications', if you need them, I will B more than happy to supply them by private E-mail. Regards Esat Atikkan
