Mitch - seee rule number one - don't dive wtih strokes, rather than rig yourself up to dive with strokes. Also under rule number one is the stroke whose geaer is so screwed up that he can not lay back. I dive mostly ocean, and I can lay back quite easilym, and as eveyone knows, swimming on you back with scuba on the surface is far better.
