Here is an update on the "gear photos on CD" project... . There seems to be enough interest to continue, so it probably will happen. . There are more photos to come (more than the ones we have already from the NACD conferrence gear seminar) so the CD will wait to include them as well. . It seems that in order to preserve the high pixel resolution, I will probably use JPEG with minimal compression. This is a lossy compression, but the loss can be adjusted. With very slight loss in clarity (probably not detectable, even in "A-B" comparisons) a substantial space savings can be had. Since I'd prefer to use a much higher pixel resolution, JPEG is the way to do that with nearly no loss in clarity. I have scanned the 5x7 photos in 400 dpi res and the files are about 15 MBytes each, so either compression or lower dpi is called for. . There will be two resolutions on the CD, since the lower resolution will cost very little in space. Probably 150 dpi. . All scans will be 24 bit (16M colors). . Leaning toward two versions with the same scans, but one will be optimized for Windows 95 (ie. have long file names). Windows 3.1x users will see all the photos, but the file names will conform to DOS's 8.3 naming convention. That CD will probably not be readable on other platforms. Therefore I will make a version that conforms strictly to ISO 9660. That should work on any system. . I need to know the best file format for the non-windows version. Is JPG universal enough for other computers? . We may include a short .AVI of George using the rebreather <is that ok, Barry?> on the CD. . Have I missed anything? As a note to those requesting purely lossless format...I have scanned the photos at 400 dpi, 24 bit color, and there are 30 photos so far. They look great! You can see every detail. But using BMP format, the CD is nearly full! So there really needs be a tradeoff. That is why the JPG format seems to be a good one. I have yet to experiment with the level of compression, but as pointed out by another user here, you can achieve a lot of space saving with virtually no loss of information using appropriate settings. If there is anyone else who is interested and hasn't replied to me or the list, do so now. Don't forget to express a "personal preference" for format. <don't see that, George!> -- Dave Mabry dmabry@mi*.co* Great Lakes Maritime Institute Underwater Research Team NACD NSS-CDS #42872
