>estimated at 500 mill to 1 billion dollars in gold (over three tons)

This doesn't add up: 3 tons = 6,000 pounds x 16 ounces x $500 per ounce
= $48 million.

Gold is around $300/ounce now. Only if the coins are very valuable because
of of their origin would this be possible. If there are too many of the
coins they won't be rare any more.

The court case is a landmark, though. I heard that the salvors spent more
than they will make on the recovery because of having to share the loot.

This is also odd. The Andrea Doria didn't have to be discovered. There are
numerous pictures of its sinking. It seems like I read an article in a scuba
mag about a diver taking pictures of it two days after it went down for LIFE
magazine.

People have been diving it for years.

Not trying to pick but sometimes the popular press doesn't get things right.
