I post collections of news stories that I think may interest divers periodically to a local scuba site here...I'm about to put together another post. Here are some of the more interesting posts from the past.... On Treasure: Third..TREASURE FOUND BUT NOT KEPT. The US Supreme court has ruled that the GREATEST RECLAIMED TREASURE IN AMERICAN HISTORY does not belong to the salvors, the Columbus-America Discovery Group, but instead belong to the 39 children companies of the origional insurance companies that paid for its loss, a 130 years ago. The salvors will, however recieve the bulk of the booty (about 2/3) for their effort, estimated at 500 mill to 1 billion dollars in gold (over three tons) in the form of fist sized nuggets, huge bars, and super rare freshly minted coins. The ship was the Central America, a side wheel steamer lost in an 1857 hurricane en route to New York, with a loss of 425 people drowned. (My Note..In many goldrush era shipwreck cases, many times people were lost not because they were taken by surprise, but because many of them were emmigrating back to the east coast, after finding their fortunes in California gold, and as was the custom of the day, (to prevent theft) most of them had their gold sown into their cloths, or strapped to their bodies in some way. When they jumped into the water, they sank straight to the bottom - probably giving some sharks a little indigestion...) A judge has granted a Mr. Moyer exclusive rights to anything he finds on the 1956 wreck of the luxury Italian vessel, the Andrea Doria, which he discovered in '82, and has made some 56 dives on. The last 14 bottles of Scotch whisky salvaged from the scottish shipwreck the Politician were auctioned by Christie's for $17,250. The story of the wreck was made into a 1950's movie..the "Tight Little Island". The ship was lost off the Western Isles on Feb. 5, 1941, on its way to Jamaica with 250,000 bottles of Scotch whisky and other luxury goods. (Ed. note - Will a certain Mr. Moyer be celebrating his recent won court victory with some of this specially brine-aged ambrosia stolen from Neptune's cellar?) 1865 SHIPWRECK FOUND IN CALIFORNIA Don Knight of Deep Sea Research Inc. recently revealed pictures of the ship the Brother Jonathan, found somewhere near Crescent city in northern California. The ship struck a sunken ledge north of Crescent city on July 30th, 1865, with only 19 survivors out of 240 people. No wreckage was ever found until now. The pictures from the small submarine apparently show a nearly intact ship, with numerous artifact still intact. Two china plates, a medicine bottle, and a hull spike were recovered, and old fishing nets were seen to be snagged on the ship. Gold and personal valuables known to be aboard the ship would amount to millions in today's dollars. An army officer aboard was carrying a $200,000 military payroll. The exact location is being kept secret, until the local and federal governments determine who will receive any valuable and historical treasures recovered.
