Subject: My First Hogarthian Rig
Folks

Since the list is cluttered with garbage anyway, I thought I would add to the
clutter with my own garbage. The subject line is indeed accurate. I have
finally put together a Hogarthian Rig.

One of the first things I noticed was how simple it was. The rig is
fully redundant, but there are no more hoses than my open water rig. Even
better, there are ONLY TWO HOSES coming out of the main reg.

I managed to sell off my Al80's and picked up some good used steel 72's
(lighter, less buoyant, etc). I would rather have bigger tanks, but budget
is a factor here, and I won't need more range until I get some additional
training.

I had fun putting the manifold on my twin 72's in the dive shop. I put the
bands on and then looked at the tank boots. I asked myself "how could they
possibly enhance the safety of a dive?" then I threw them out. I am thinking
of putting some duct tape on the bottom of the tanks to stop them from getting
any deep scratches. Perhaps someone could comment on this.

I have been breathing the long hose for about a year now. The thing that has
been annoying me is that the second stage falls on the ground every time I put
the BC on. I remembered back to the 40th time I watched "Doing it Right", and
added a bolt-snap. The reg. doesn't fall to the ground anymore.

Another thing I noticed was the buoyancy of the rig. I put it in my test tank
(read hot-tub) and found that the whole thing is about 5lbs negative when
empty. I will pull another 8lbs off my weight belt. Interestingly, this will
put the total rig weight at about 80lbs. Not bad when you compare that to a
single Al80 rig at 60lbs. I don't think I will get the total weight down much
more, but I will hopefully carry the weight in a more usefull form than lead.

I will try it out in the pool this week, then off to the no-longer-warm
St. Lawrence river for open water trials.

Now I need more training. I haven't seen much around Ottawa that looked
worthwhile. Suggestions welcome.
