Jeff, you are correct in assuming that if I could get the perfect computer it would be more interesting that what is out there, but unless it costs the same as a bottom timer, I still would not buy it. Like you said, there is nothing "evil" in a computer, and an underwater decom sounds nice. For me to try to minimize my bottom time by "getting more credit" for excursions shallower than I believed I was at would probably make me just not believe the comuputer, and for long exposures I can not maximize the PPO2 on deco for fear of tox, so even the ones built into Farb's rebreather would not help me. The real problem is that no one model accounts properly for deco, so I have to use DECOM and one other method, and or get Bill Hamilton to work out a schedule for me based on feedback I have already given him for years. Combine this with the fact that most manufacturers are so scared of liablilty, that they pad the aglorithm and end up with something that asks for too much deco, and then it asks for even more if you try to incorporate deep stops into it. The Brits figured out a long time ago that those who can get bent on a dive computer had some other predispositon, usually a PFO, yet in this country, fear of litigation where the simple minded can win, as in a suit over too little deco, is easier to argue to idoits than one of for too much deco, although a good expert could prove it. The bottom line is that these devices offer no real answers, yet they cost a lot of money, cause other problems, as in the case of the hoseless ones, and the shitty ones that fail, and are a deterrent to learning real deco . I really think the better way is to learn your shit, rather than buy it, and that is a lot more satisfying, and will save your ass in a pinch. I was helping the Organ Grinder Monkey take students on a mix dive on the Wilkesbarre, and their Cochran hoseless spg and computers quit on the way down. They did not know their depth, bottom time or deco (but then Deans and I did, so not a big problem), and they did not know their remaining back gas (again not a problem, since this was to be a short dive). However, we did have to cut a great dive short due to the obvious risk, and I would have realy been pissed if I had been paying to dive and had some dumb ass ruin a dive like that. But then, anyone diving with me for real would have no such stuff, as rule number one would have kept me on the boat, or sent me with Han. Use your money for the good stuff. George M.
