So a 5% adverse effect rate is almost always true for any drug. ok Pete, thanks, this is more understandable. It appeared you were stating the incidence of the more serious side effects was 5%,and that did not jive with the figures I had;5% rate of ANY adverse effect is certainly possible and acceptable. It would certainly seem that doxycycline is a much better choice;the subjective info that's been related here seems to suggest that the photosensitivity issue is not a large problem,(and there seem to be well-recognized warning signs such as tingling of the hands & feet if it IS going to be a concern) and the mechanism of action is better understood. My info does relate that the incidence of G.I disturbance is high, perhaps as much as 39%,but that much of this can be alleviated by drinking plenty of water when taking the med. However,my info says that taking at bedtime seems to produce a higher rate of gastric distress, and recommends avoiding this dosage. Also, use of sunblocks seem to have only limited efficacy in preventing the photosensitivity;corticosteroids and/or antihistamines may be necessary in the case of a severe reaction. Hopefully, one of these days I'll be in a position to report on this first-hand,when i get to take MY trip to PNG ;) Take care, John L. Dunk Tallahassee,Fl. screwloose@ne*.co*
