Dear Carlos In a message dated 96-08-29 17:50:19 EDT, you write: >A few questions about your rig: > >>belt pouch (for compass, 2nd computer, come-to-me float - tables - slate) > >So you carry 2 computers *and* tables? Gee... talk about belt-and-suspenders >kind of people... The computers are quite small --- I use the Bridge II or the Aladin Pro one is on the right wrist the other is in the pouch. We have stripped off the traditional straps and replace them with 1/8 inch shock cord -- easier to slid on and off and they do not come undone. Tables are reformated Hamilton Research tables that are on small laminated cards approximately 1 /12 inch by 3 inch with a small bungee to wrap into the palm of my hand they have 15 - 50 min bottom times in depths of 100 - 200 for air and 160 - 300 for Tri Mix -- I carry only the ones needed for the particular dive with some depth contingencies. Its about the size of a pack of chewing gum. >>sticks, two power bars and space blanket) > >What good is the space blanket in the water? Good question --- I always carried one when biking -- Its small and it can be used to wrap around the head to keep warm and will also work very well as a big reflector. >>depending on dive 1 - reels (one alwys 2x depth of water diving in > >I guess this is for emergency deco. But is this length sufficient when >there is a current? 'Coz if there is one, you don't hang straight up from >the bottom, but at a slant. 2 x water depth has proven to be sufficient -- I do not favor floating deco -- so I will tie off on the bottom aftershooting the bag -- once the bag is up I will let out about another 30 feet of line to take into condideration the current and the flag effect of me on the line. If I underestimate -- I can always shoot the second bag and reel for an extension -- but to date have not needed too. >>The mindset however is always the same -- get there safely and return >safely. > >Great idea. > >Joel, I decided against posting this publicly because some people might think >of it as an attack against you, which is the farthest thing from my mind. The >whole idea is to find out why you do what you do and learn from it. However, >should you want to post your answers publicly, please feel free to do so. Having been in the diving business on the front lines for more than a few years now -- I rarely feel attacked and in fact if someone thinks that a question is an attack they probably should not be diving or walking and chewing gum for that matter. Much of what I have learned has come from asking questions and then trying it out. The guys I learn from are the guys who are out thier doign it all the time -- Billy Deans, Steve Bielenda, Hank Garvin, Tom Mount, George Irvine (yup you can learn a lot from that guy) Gary Gentile etc. These are the people who get out there and do it. I dont necessarily agree with everything they do but each has special and unique talents that we all learn from. Never be affraid to ask a question. > >BTW, love your mag. > Thanks -- the Fall issue will be out soon -- every diveable submarine in the US waters. Take Care Joel Silverstein
