Many thanks to one and all who replied to my post. Its good to see that one can still get valuable responses on the list where people have obviously taken some time and given thought to the problem. Despite some of the flaming crap you have to filter out. I feel a little guilty as it would seem that I have given the impression I do not know how to work out my gas consumption etc. This was something I learnt on my first diving course years ago under BSAC and is not what I was trying to get at. Basically the problem is that I dont know what "exact" depths I'll be going to when exploring a wreck. In the case of the dive I'll be doing this Tuesday the wreck lies on its side and I plan to dive midway between the bottom and the top of the wreck so I can (vis permitting) see the full width of the deck and spot suitable penetration points as I travel the 400ft length of her. If I see somewhere below I'll pop down and take a look. In so doing I may have now hit 50m rather than staying at say 42m. Having investigated I find that the area wasnt suitable and return to 42m to carry on. Now I have to assume a 50m square profile when deciding upon what deco to do. Also as I will be diving to 50% reserve ( for reasons that I hope were clear in my first post ) and have been back at 42m for the remainder, my bottom time will be a lot longer than if I had really been at 50m. These factors combined will mean a grossly excessive deco schedule if I have to bail out on air, in fact there will not be sufficient supplies. That's the problem. One response I received suggested sticking to rule of thirds and indeed this is what I have done up till now. However this means I am surfacing with nearly 2/3rds of my bottom gas in reserve due to using the EAN80 for deco. I feel this is a little over conservative and looking to find a balance where my contingencies allow for one of 3 possible reg failures. Maybe that's cutting it a bit fine in some peoples opinion but this is what I am happy with. I hope the above clarifies the problem. If not I think I'll leave it as the problem is a convoluted one and it would seem, tricky to explain. Lawrence D.
