On all my deep OC mixed gas, I used to use rule of thirds independently
for each different mixture. Another way of saying "1/3 in, 1/3 out, 1/3
in reserve" is "plan on using 2/3 of the gas and leave 1/3 in reserve".
This means I would be switching from trimix to EAN with 1/3 of my trimix
remaining, then switching from EAN to O2 with 1/3 of my EAN remaining. (I
would surface with about 9/10 of my surface-supplied O2 remaining -
keeping open the option of IWR). I didn't do this as means to minimize
wasted gas, I did this as a means to minimize wasted *mass*. (i.e, keep
it as simple as absolutely possible for the needs at hand with adequate
safety margin).

Aloha,
Rich
