OK the latest info is that the diver who died had a regulator free flow,
spit it out, refused his buddy's (offered) spare reg and shot to the 
surface.  So far I haven't found out if he had a spare 2nd stage or where 
he had it, but I don't think it would have made any difference in this 
case--sounds like sheer panic, and I doubt narcosis had anything to do 
with it.  Must have been a really lousy reg or no maintenance; it really
wasn't that cold down there.  I was only wearing a polartec and 6mm wet suit
top that day at deeper depths.
