I was on the boat for an afternoon dive last Sunday that earlier had asisted the diving accident by providing oxygen and a nurse (she was a diver on that morning charter, and provided CPR but apparently to no avail). The wreck where the accident occurred was the Marsh, and the boat doing the charter was the GW from what I heard. There are conflicting reports on what caused the incident; I think everyone is pretty sure he was choking at depth, but I'm not sure anyone knows why. One story is that his buddy got to him but he was unconcious, so he inflated his BC and up he shot, the other is that the buddy tried to give him his reg, but the guy shot up anyway voluntarily. In any event, the buddy also came up too fast and blacked out after getting back on the boat. Can anyone provide anymore info? We probably won't know anymore until the report comes out, so I suppose it's probably useless to speculate now, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was an embolism; I was kinda surprised he didn't revive considering they did CPR right away and a nurse showed up very quickly (again, as I understand, this is all second hand info). But that's when we thought it was just an underwater blackout. About the Marsh's sinister reputation: it's probably just one the nicest, easiest wrecks to get to, and consequently is the first wreck a lot of people do--often at the very beginning of the season, when skills are rusty and the water is COLD. Combine that with a lot of less experienced people out there, and you get problems. Why are there no fatalities on the deeper wrecks? Probably because these people stay away from those. Heck, the Marsh was the first wreck I ever dove in Kingston. Mike Dowler
