Michel, that had nothing to do with you, it was a warning to the cave 'necks to mind theor own business. The diver had been working in the spring for two hours, and had used his back air, but did not konw it. He was running a stage bottle of air to save the back air, like we all do. He had been on duty at 30 feet , and for the next mission he took deco bottles down. We do this all day with no problem. JJ and I were putting in all of the deco gas and this guy , along with Landon, Dittner, and Martinez, were also in the water safety diving and helping JJ and I take the bottles. I got out to get something, and when I got back to the beach they had gone ahead and taken the bottles I was going to take, so this guy would not have been doing this if I had not gone back to the van. JJ and I had open water gear, the rest had cave gear. There is no mystery here: the guy was so focused on what he was doing that he did not realize he was out of gas. When the stage emptied he went for his normal rig which was empty, and kept trying to make it work, rather than take the reg JJ was trying to put in his muth, or breath any of the other 200 cubic feet of gas he was carrying for me, or the one thousand cubic feet of gas laying on the floor a few feet away from him. A couple of complete idiots in the cave diving community, and I realize that does not narrrow the field much, have been trying to blame JJ , saying "he drwoned one of his students". It is true that this guy had been a student of JJ at one time, just like Exley had an instructor, but I can asssure you that this guy is a long way from being a "student", and I have been wreck diving with him a few times myself. Dropping bottles in basicly open water or clear cavern is not exactly a tough ordeal, as evidenced by the fact that JJ was diving a single 40 and I was using a single 80, all day long. The cave divers out there want to find fault with us in any way they can, and I can assure you that I will recoprocate, which is what my message to them implied, in typically damaging and horrifying fashion. When any of these guys can resoond to a problem the way JJ and I do, they can talk. When any of them can take the pebble form either his hand or my hand, I will quit diving. I will, and I know JJ will, continue to give people a chance and teach people to do this. It the cave diving community does not like that, they can lick my boots. Bill Gaqvin did it for me, and we are pasing it on, despite the howling of the weenies who are more busy selling faulty dive gear and teaching fear and loathing to ever understand what goes on with the WKPP. Michel, you keep thinking I am talking about you, just because you start the thread - not so. I know you are just curious as to what goes on, and I am happy to tell you . - G George M.
