Rich, some of us can do the hydroatlantic on trelatively little gas . The max depth on the sand is 180 feet, when I do classes on it we do a 30 minute bottom time and most often have a 160 to 170 max depth. I would submit to you that even most(not all) good divers cannot complete that dive on a single tank. We usually do a combination of swimming the wreck to let the divers get it down combined with some penetration. We dive it on tables with run time and and use EAN 80 on deco which is slightly faster than o2 on that profile (we start the 80 at 30 feet) the run time is between 64 and 70 minutes depending on whether the diver elklects to go on the 160 or 170 schedule. To me this dive warrants either large singles or doubles. As I'm not aware of a diver dying from reserve air I opt to teach this program in doubles and on my personal dives I use either doubles or a 108 overfilled so it equals double 70's as on at least two previous occassions I have met divers who I did not know that were in gas management problems and had to give them gas so they could make it to the surface i will still stick with my doubles on this dive. I do that dive on double oms 85's or the overfilled 108. And yes I do surface with close to 2000 psig so I have a large surplus of gas. On my personal dives I do a 40 min + BT and surface with 1400 psid which is well over 1/3 reserve. Just my two cents on the gas that should be carried on this type dive. Yes you can do bounce dives with much less.
