This is the crux of many of the problems we experience here in our
little piece of Texas heaven -- the shop owners are so eager to create more
divers (big money, gear-buying, Carribean trip-going divers) that the
inherent risks involved in diving are not only downplayed, they are ignored.
Never mention to the students that they are putting themselves at risk,
because then they may decide this ain't for them, and we lose money. Hell, I
have overheard instructors tell prospects that they don't need to know how
to swim! We lose too many divers a year at Travis because training has
become a conveyor belt. I have never heard of an instructor failing to
grant someone a C-card, though I have seen many prospective divers that
should never be in the water.
