I doubt there are as many documented accidents with full face masks (FFMs) as with normal masks, but this is probably because so few divers wear FFMs. I have one -- a cheapo Cressi Sub/Parkway -- that I use whenever I dive questionable waters and don't want the reg coming out of my mouth no matter what, when the water is truly cold, and when I'm diving solo. I'd buy an AGA or Kirby Morgen if I had the money. The FFM advantages are -- depending on the mask -- underwater verbal communications, positive-pressure flow, and to a large extent, the feeling that you are covered in a complete exposure suit. The FFM disadvantages are the extreme trials of using redundant/alternate air supplies, including stage-bottle stops on the way up from deep dives, the hassle of putting the mask back in place with quarter-inch mitts on if you decide you need to say something to somebody on the surface, and if you live in a place where cold is a real issue, the problem with second stage free flows that occur from breathing through the reg before you get into the warmer-than-air cold water.
