Now that I have heard it from three different sources I assume that it is okay to openly report that Carl Sutton, an experienced cave diver and certified cave instructor from Gainesville, Florida died in a cave diving accident in Akumal, Mexico about last Saturday. I learned of it in email dated Tuesday saying "three days ago". Rumors about what happened are flying. The three reports I've received are all mutually contradictory, agreeing only that he was doing a deep dive on air. There have been only few deaths of experienced U.S. cave divers, out of more than 300 drownings in Florida caves alone. The only other instructor I know of who has drowned was Parker Turner. I did not know Carl personally. He had recently taken over as editor of Underwater Speleology. The first two issues he editted were the ones I posted excerpts from a few days ago. The previous editor, H.V. Grey, had had a lot of trouble finding a replacement when she wanted to move on to other things. Carl was off to a good start on it. It is easy to dismiss cases of idiots killing themselves when accessing the danger of the sport. But it is sobering when someone good like Parker and now Carl bites the silt. I'll post more about this when I have reliable information. Bill Mayne
