To the best of my knowledge, no one is given a carrot of becomming a
trimix instructor. A trimix instructor is not a HIGHER or LOWERE rating
it is another venue of technical instruction. We at IANTD feel this
area has the most poetential os misuse if unqualified persons become
trimix instructors.

We think the prerequisites are reasonable and that a prudent person who
seeks this level of competency will find quiet accessiable.
To become a trimix instructor:

1.Be certified as either a technical EANx or EANx Wreck or EANx Cave
instructor(EANx Wreck and Cave or technical EANx plus either cave or
wreck instructor qualifications)and a trimix diver

2. Active teaching status with IANTD with at least three years of
teaching experience

3. Have taught 6 EANx courses, 3 deep air courses, 3 advanced EANx
courses, 3 advanced deep air courses, 2 technical deep air courses and
3 technical EANx courses

4. Be recommended by a trimix instructor after having assisted in two
complete trimix courses

5. A log of 500 dives including 200 dives deeper than 100 feet and a
minimum of 40 trimix dives

6. Be a trimix blender

7. Attend and complete an IEC

8. Complete a comphrensive waterskills evaluation

As far as qualifications at other levels all of these are higher
ratings and afford the instructor the occassion to teach strict
technical diving programs. A technical EANx instructor program is the
most productive rating in IANTD and is a program in and of itself. It
is not a stepping stone to trimix. In the UK per diving captia there
are more trimix instructors than in any other country including the USA
and we offer the trimix program several times a year to all who are
qualified to attend it.

I hope this answere any questions those who are following this thread
may have.

Also the reason more trimix instructors were not made in Australia
before was it was not even legal to use trimix gas in most parts of the
country. Even today it is a debated practice there and until such time
of its full acceptance being qualified as a trimix instructor offers
few advantages other than status to the instructor. I have just talked
to Rob and he informed me that his statement about three mix
instructors dates back to 19993 and it was due to the reasons stated
above. Once it is acceptable he plans just as we do to make instructor
qualifications available to all who are qualified which will still omit
a lot of wannabe's.

I surley hope that folks becomming technical EANx instructors are doing
so to teach at that level and not as a step to trimix instruction. It
is seperate and a strong course in itself. One should grow into mix
instructor not do jumps.

Again our program is designed to provide quality, comptent, qualified.,
experienced and safe instructors at all levels. This is why the IANTD
program is the most rigourous of technical training programs, and has
even been reffered to by some TDI instructors as UDT style training,
which we take as a complimient as thuis is survival training and
produces safer and more capable divers and instructors.
