The BMD rebreather, a semi-closed unit (that might have been pulled off the market, if it ever made it?) used two donut-shaped counterlungs, more or less built into the backpack shoulder straps, so they went around each arm. That way, whatever the diver's orientation, the air could find it's own equilibrium. It was a good idea. They also had a really nice diffuser for exhausted air. For semi-closed, it looked like a nice design. If it is gone, it's still a great idea for you to steal for your homebuilt stuff. I've got a picture of it someplace...
