Under heavy use in sea water, the grease helps prevent corrosion from
forming inside the ambient pressure chamber. This used to be a relatively
big problem for me diving in the tropics until I added the SPEC to my
SP Mk-10s. For me, the question is why doesn't everyone use the stuff.

That SPEC system makes me corrosion-paranoid. I worry about a little salt water
bubble getting trapped by the grease against the metal of the regulator, and
causing hidden corrosion.
Here's what I do: Casual rinsing doesn't seem to prevent all corrosion, so I
throw my regulator (capped), lights, tools and everything else into a big tub
of fresh water. I leave it there for an hour or so, or sometimes overnight. I
then hose it off and let it dry.
Occasionally I will disassemble everything and soak it in a 50-50 vinegar/ water
solution. I use cheap, white vinegar, although any acidic will do. The US
Diver's service manual recommends a weak nitric acid solution. I like vinegar,
because it's something I have around the house anyway. The acid dissolves
verdgris and salts, leaving the chrome squeaky clean and free of green corrosion
around the seams.
