Subject: Re: Euro Nitrox Regs

At TEK, the Scubapro rep told me that the industry wants all nitrox contained
in, and breathed through nitrox dedicated, incompatible-with-air components.
I'm sure that uninformed consumers will jump on the bandwagon when their
instructors tell them that using an air regulator with EANx32 will lead to Ox
Tox and explosion.

Already many nitrox fill stations will not pump even PREMIX EANx 32 or 36 into
customers' tanks if they are not O2 cleaned.

We should see the writing on the wall. They want our money.

Further to debate earlier this year - I have again heard more details on the
probability of the CEN (a european Standards body) introducing a new pillar
valve and regulator for Scuba diving with Nitrox.

The current plan is to base it on a German O2 Ambulance system - this has a
inverted DIN style - the pillar valve has the threaded part of the din which
does not rotate (as on Std Din Regs) - the reg first stage has a female DIN
section which screws over the valve ->

   Pillar Valve ----
      ---- | |--
     | \/\/\ | | |
     | | <- | | | First Stage
     | /\/\/ | |--
     | | |____|

If this is adopted this would mean all Nitrox Divers in Europe would need to
change cylinder valves and get first stages modified - It also means total
dedication of equipment - in that Air regulators could not be used on these
cylinders and vica versa. I for one would have to double up on all equipment
as I dive in the USA a lot and would need either Yoke or "normal" DIN regs as
well as this new system. In addition my info source informs me that the
Pillar valve DIN does not look strong and may not take a wreck or cave roof
thump very well.

Apparently this system is already in use in the Drager Rebreather

Does anyone else have any info on this - is it just manufacture BS ?? Are
the Agencies involved in advising CE what a unpractical idea it is (IANTD/TOM
- do you know anything??)
