I talked to a local scubapro expert here in Atlanta. He says
that the spec kit silicone does not loose its viscosity significantly
in temps that humans can dive in. To affect the performance you would
have to alter the response of the spring/ambient water pressure against
the opposing lp side of the reg.   

The better question is why use it unless you are in freezing temps 
anyway... I heard of folks using alcohol or other liquids that have
lower freezing temps..

Spec kits are kind of nasty for warm ocean or silty diving ...
