Free diving for many hours, at least when I do it (don't know about Dan), 
is in some ways more like hiking than SCUBA diving.  I usually cover a 
large area and spend a lot of time sight seeing.  In fact most of the 
time I don't bring my gun etc. and do go sight seeing :).  In fact, when
I do it in a river, I do spend a lot of the time hiking!
