Running, swimming, cycling and all work well when done in the normal
fashion, like running a steady pace for five miles or so, but the way to really
get the big gains is to interval train to shorten your recovery time.
What we do is all of the above on a regular schendule, but include some
speedwork and sprinting on intervals . Bringing the intervals down to the point
where there is very little rest will give you a major edge in gas consumption,
especially when swimming, otherwise exerting, or under stress.
For me it is a matter of having to be survey man on most dives in really
deep water, so I must be able to match the guys who are gliding in fron of me,
and they are of the caliber of JJ , Gavin, Casey, Irving, Brent, Rick etc.The
other thing is that I like to think that if the shit really hits the fan, I
will
live through it.
This is not something to do right off of the bat, or you will risk
really
hurting yourself, but after working up to it, try putting out to the point of
cardiovascular "panic" a few times. Check your pulse - when it comes back down
to between 60 and 80, do it again.
For example, yesterday we did 10 100's on 130 for a warmup, 10 on 130
decending 120 to 110, and then we did a 100 on 2, a 200 on 3, a 300 on 4, and
400 on 5(minutes). Then we did all out 100 butterfly sprints on 1 minute with 3
minutes rest, folowed by ten 50's butterfly, free free butterfly etc, so that
it
resulted in butterfly 100s in 50 sprints. This can be done with other
exercises,
like running or biking, but the equivalent speeds are beyond the body's ability
to not rip tendons or damage other parts.
This is the kind of effort required to get the big gains, and believe
me, it is nice be confident in the fact that you will use no more going out
than
you did coming in, or that you can deal with a problem without using too much.
And for those of you who like to check pressure guages to see if you got your
buddy by a couple hundred or so, we consider beating somebody on gas in
increments of 500 or 1000 psi. I saw Bill Mee beat somebady by 1700 psi on a
300
foot dive, and I got a guy by 500 - on my single to his doubles. There ain't no
shortcuts, and I am 44, so there are no excuses, either. - G
