Can any of the attached medical divers offer any advice? There are a number of studies of free divers who have been bent. The pearl diving Ama often get bent, and there are even some folklore names for DCI -- I believe it's called "taravu" by one south pacific group. Taravu is roughly translated as "the madness". Your friend is definitely not the only free diver to suffer DCI. Also, he sounds like he had incurred a noticable nitrogen load while diving in cold water, working hard, and practicing multiple rapid ascents with very short bottom times. That's one recipe for DCI if you do that as much as your friend seems capable of doing! I can dig up more references, if no one else has them handy, but they are not with me at work. I could also suggest a call to the UHMS office in Bethesda, MD. They will gladly do custom research like this and send you the results.
