Actually, that was the least preferable solution.  Can't we split the
list so that folks will not have to filter commercial material?

If splitting the list is too difficult, may I suggest that you
standardize a prefix other than the unobtrusive "com."?  Specifically,
begin the subject line with "COMMERCIAL: <subject area>" so that we
can easily identify commercial interest postings.
