In a message dated 96-02-07 13:12:47 EST, you write: >In addition the express ascent scenario that you propose applies if the >line was NOT deployed for a wreck penetration. Some of us do not use >'way back lines' on wreck diving unless penetrating, and even then, >raerely. At first you state you'd use the rest of your line to do an ascent on. I said what if you were at the end of it? You trying to tell me you can find your way on a scattered wreck in three to five feet of visibility in 35F of 200FSW in the Mudhole? You are obviously NOT a north east wreck diver! I'd love to see you find your way back on the Goulandris or Oil wreck without a "way back line"! Cheers, JD Selser Response: Let's see. Hmm. Oil wreck, Ayurocca, across from the Across Wreck. The170 to snad, 150 to decks, half tracks on decks, 130 to super structure. Hoffman likes to shotline the super structure. Nice 'sparks room'. Got some radio parts & stuff out of there. That is a wreck that is kind of hard to get lost on. It is not broken up & scattered. Forward at 150, watch out for net. Run off the 'end' of midships to stern, crossing some sand. No I don't think I dove it that many times - maybe thirty or so. Across wreck, @ 160 or so & dark. Again got a porthole but turned out to be steel. The first time I dove it Hoffmann didn't have his new boat. Went out on the old Sea Lion. As for Goulandris, yep been there. Texas Tower, 200 + stuff, yep been there. No I'm not a NE wreck diver. I'm a diver. That aside: Again, what is interesting that you have failed to read & understand the point of the original post - "All should choose what is best for them and there is room for improvement. But before changing things, understand how they came about." Thus without understanding that, you have been trying to demonstrate why I am wrong. OK I may be of the old school, but we survived the reel-less dives on many of the wrecks that today are considered 'advanced'. The reason to carry an upline, that bulky gear, was that very independence. Finding the anchorline was not tantamount to survival. So, if on occassion you don't find it, just deploy the line & ascend. If plan involves going that far from anchor line that you will get lost due to inability to navigate by brail, then instead of spending time on laying & retrieving a 'way back line', ascend on upline from where you are. Why spend the time to return. No I am not a NE wreck diver. Again, I am a diver, who has NAWD experience. Regards Esat Atikkan
