I do not use jersey uplines because of its bulk. When diving current we always liveboat, so it doesn't matter where we eventually surface. During hanging decompression dives we inflate a liftbag or a pop float and drift beneath it. The bag can be attached to a reel, but more often, I attach a 20 foot line to my bag prior to the dive, so it's all set to go. I tie a loop in the end of the line, and I can clip my bug bag, spear or whatever to the end of the line, and avoid messing with it while I drift. Perhaps on a charter boat, the captain would like the divers to use uplines attached to the bottom, so he doesn't have to chase multiple liftbags. Seems to me a reel could still be used to deploy the line, but you'd be leaving lots of line lying around afterwards! We only dive with a few people in the water at a time. Everyone left aboard the boat has only one responsibility: to support the divers when they surface. _____Andy Cohen ________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: Up reels Author: biped@ix*.ne*.co* (L. Up reels are bulky and it seems that using a line reel would be more streamlined. If a line reel is used as an up reel then what size line would be needed? -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@terra.net'.
