Folks (and George), I am not suggesting that the line from an up reel be tied off to the wreck and left behind to pollute or biodegrade. This is the configuration I was taught in an IANTD Deep Air course: The up reel is used in the event that you can not make it back to your anchor/ascent line. We used a Reef Scuba reel with 1/4" twisted nylon line and a 100# lift bag carried on the back between the tanks. Once the lift bag has been deployed and reaches the surface, the line is tied off around the reel (not a fixed object on the bottom) and you ascend the line. The reel and line are easily retrieved once on the surface. Of course, the boat crew has been following your lift bag and is waiting for you on the surface. My question had to do with wether or not a line reel would suffice for this application. For those of you who responded thus far, thanks - Allen
