I was told today, that some ANDI instructors were in town from Sweden
and stated that ANDI had a Technical EANx program in 1987. They also
stated that Ed Betts started EANX in the recreational diving community.

Having been aware that Ed Betts first started EANx diving in 1989 after
taking a course from Dick Rutkowski(IANTD) and being aware that ANDI
was not formed until after 1989 I looked up Ed Betts certification
records in our files Ed is IAND (now IANTD)EANx diver No. 300 certified
by Dick Rutkowski in feb 1989. In April 1991 while at my house in Miami
shores Ed asked me about trimix diving and how to get tables and if it
was an activity which a certification program should be involved with.
At that time he had just produced his first version of the ANDI basic
instructor manual of which I was reviewing. Ed at this time was still
using Rutkowski's EANx manual(the only one in publication at that time)
for a text. He had not published EANx or any technical materials at
that time in fact I think the records will show that he published his
first EANx text in late 1992. I have a copy of both that text and his
orginal instructor manual. To my knowledge he has not until this year
actually published technical diving text, and I beleive Tony Satterfield
who also received his technical training under IANTD ( Tom Mount) is
preparing these for him.

His first trimix dives anyone knows about was a course in which Bob
Ramio was in and Ed let the students dive by themselves on his "new
Tables" and he dived after they came up. Bob please comment.

So lets set the record straight, Ed did not start recreational EANx, he
did not publish the first text and he certainly was not the first to be
involved in technical diving. In fact he is just getting into technical
diving in the real world. This does not mean his program is good or
bad, it only means that a lot of assumptions have been made about when
ANDI started and its role in tech diving that are not true.

Tom Mount
