Posted on 1-24: Sean, I have made a number of ice dives, using both the Blizzard and Maximus. On two occassions I have had to deal with free-flow problems using the Blizzard, no big problem. On both occasions water temp was between 34 and 36 degrees. I have since purchased the Maximus and have had no problem with it of any kind. <end> When I was caught in current and had to work, I found the maximus simply wouldn't deliver. Adding CO2/hypoxia blackout to my list of worries is/was totally unacceptable. My Maximus is now only used for deco bottles because it can be easily adjusted down or up on cracking resistance. I have been told that other diver's have died because of the Maximus, so it is thought by their dive buddies. I personally feel the swivel/adjustment restriction in the hose is a problem. It has never iced on me and I've done my share of ice and near-freezing deep dives in the Great Lakes with it before switching. A pair of cavers said that they liked the Blizzard much more than the Max. due to breathability. What you think? I thought the 1st stages for the Blizzard and the Max. were the same. Stay away from the Maximus as a reg that might be used during exertion. Even cranked up to no cracking resistance, i.e. 2nd stage always letting small amount of air by, the thing simply won't give you the big flow when you need it. Try a properly tuned high performance reg like the VX10, Poseidon, or the new scuba pros and then yours after you've run around the block a few times and are breathing real hard and fast. You'll see the difference. David Drake EDS/SATURN Infrastructure 8-320-4190 on GMnet Spring Hill, TN USA Internet: saturn.ddrake05@gm*.co*
