A warning to the un-initiated regarding strobe lights, ala the Dive Rite
debate:
I purchased one of those strobe/light combo units that Jeff described,
although it was not made by Performance - it was made in China, and rated to
100m. On a night dive in the Solomons that went no deeper than 100 ft., the
sucker flooded and was ruined. I had greased the o-rings (which is unusual
for me, since I am not known as a maintenance hound, just ask McKenney), but
it flodded anyway.
It turned out to be a useless piece of crap that I wasted $25.00 on. Bob
Keet sold it to me, so I made him wash my feet for a month after that.
I don't know if the same manufacturer makes them for Performance, like the
one Jeff described, but his description sounded just like the one that
flooded on me.
Strobes are a great idea - but for safety, I'll take the OTS comm gear
anytime, especially with a topside rig - that way, you can talk to the boat
("no, no, I'm over here, dummies!!") if they can't find you.
Just my humble, yet learned opinion...
Kevin.
