What I was taught is that if you are going to pass your octopus to a stressed diver breathe it first. Makes sense. Makes incredible sense if it has a switch and/or dial that might have to be played with. If you plan to breathe it first, you're gonna have to take the reg you were breathing out of your mouth. Therefore: the long hose thing is not about whether it's smarter to keep the reg you know works, it's about which working reg you pass. Do what you want. If it's me, I'll pass my main reg and use my octopus. So, my main reg has the long hose. (I had to change its hose anyway, the one it came with was 29" and heavy -- would've been a hoot to see some really stressed out diver grab it and TRY to get it in his mouth.
