Hi Jeff, I'm glad you posted the "blood pooling" hypothesis. When you first suggested it to me, it presented a possible answer to a narcosis dilema I had noticed for quite some time. When I discussed symptoms of narcosis with other people, I found a difference between what many of them experienced & what I experienced. Many people tell me the narcosis is most severe immediately upon reaching the bottom, and then subsides throughout the dive. But for me, I find that I usually have a minute or two of clear-headedness when I first get to depth, and then the narcosis symptoms intensify throughout the course of the dive (this seems to be true regardless of my exertion patterns). When you told me about the blood-pooling hypothesis, it occurred to me that, whereas most people I know B-line it for the bottom in a head-down position, I generally free-fall in a prone position (like a sky-diver). Perhaps the people who experience strong narcosis in the beginning of the dive are just getting a head-rush after reverting themselves upon reaching the bottom. Has anyone else noticed whether they find narcosis most severe at the beginning of the dive vs. at the end of the dive? Any correlations to descent patterns? Aloha, Rich
