I also said "T the line in or come back later with a gap reel". I was trying to make a point of a "well there's this really cool gap possibly" and why you shouldn't carry 20 gap reels into a cave if you're only planning one gap. I was not suggesting to use visual gaps, rather I was suggesting not carrying 20 gap reels when you are not planning 20 jumps. I don't know why I bother, the cave doesn't get interesting until you're about 3000' out and then everything's T'd anyway. >So if you plan visual jumps, it might be advisable to consider >the "lost mask" like a "lights-out" scenario. Unless you plan to >rely entirely on your buddy. I never said "plan visual jumps". If you "plan a visual jump" why not just bring the reel ahead of time. I was talking about a situation where there was an unplanned new jump that you want to check out, options 1) T the jump using your safety line, 2) visual jump, 3) come back later with a jump reel. It's part of your risk assessment. I'll probably do 1 or 2 depending. If you're worried about breaking your mask on a cave dive then you're probably worrying about too many other things as well to enjoy yourself on the dive at all. Why not just sell the gear and go see a good hockey game, you won't hurt yourself, and it'll cost less.
