There is no question that any open forum will be replete will information, bad information, etc. We did a paper on the topic (Clark & Atikkan, IQ 92 Proceeding). Thus it is not surprising that truisms become truths, myths become facts & the generalizations propagated in dive classes, by dive shop clerks as well as diving 'magazine' take hold as Neptune's apostle truth. What defence have we - education. That is, instead of shying away from Strokeserve & other forums, agencies of lesser repute & ruminating as to how great we are, delve into those, write, say or more precisely TEACH. What, however, is equally catching in Randy's post is the last paragraph, where the element of the ogre, governmental controls appears as shop controls. He does freely admit that there is a financial advantage to such a de facto monopoly, which any enterprise would welcome. Eliminate the 'do it yourselfer' because that particular job (changing O-rings, greasing equipment!!) requires the stamp of approval of a shop person. Irrespective of the fact that the guy doing this may be a mecahnic, a technician, an engineer whatever their particular training, under the guise of safety, with that financial end thrown in, it is subservient to the shop. Now we have to have some means of quality assurance at those shops. A means of assuring that Joe Shopclerk, fresh out of 11th grade, on his 1st summer job, is aware of the difference between those greases & was not thinking about his Saturday night date when using the lubricant. So how about a state agency to test & certify them. We have it for MD's, Vets. Social Workers, why not for Oxygen Cleaners. No problem with qualfied enterprises earning what they deserve. The problem is the a cartel being set up under the guise of safety. This in itself is regulation by entities of dubious qualifications, with the spectre of government regulation omnipresent. Happy New Year Esat Atikkan
